The Importance of Preventive Vet Care

When you bring your pet in to Johns Creek Veterinary Clinic for their routine veterinary wellness exam our vet will perform a thorough head to tail examination of your animal to determine the condition of your pet's overall health.

Regular wellness exams give your vet an opportunity to spot early signs of disease and begin treatment before the condition becomes more severe.

When combined with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention, and proper nutrition, wellness exams give your pet their best chance at excellent lifelong health.

What to Expect During Your Pet's Annual Wellness Exam

The vet will give your pet a thorough physical examination in order to get a complete picture of your animal's overall health. An exam includes the following elements:

General Condition

Your pet's demeanour and physical condition can provide clues to their overall health. How your animal stands and walks, their level of alertness, and whether they are a healthy weight for their size are all important indicators of overall health.

Coat & Skin

Your vet will check your pet's skin and coat for signs of issues, such as excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff or abnormal shedding or hair loss.

Face & Head

Your pet's eyes, ears and nose will be examined for signs of discharge or abnormalities. We will also examine your pet's mouth for symptoms related to oral health problems such as periodontal disease, plaque buildup, and loose or damaged teeth.

Internal Health

Blood pressure and heart function are vitally important to your pet's overall health. We'll test these to ensure they're normal. Then our vet will listen to your pet's lungs for evidence of breathing difficulties.

Lymph nodes will be checked for pain or swelling, and we will also examine the abdomen to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not exhibiting any signs of pain or discomfort.

Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and kittens need proper medical attention in their first few weeks of life to ensure that they get off to a healthy start.

These adorable little animals will receive a complete physical examination, appropriate immunizations, and deworming medication to start them on a path to long term good health. We will also test for intestinal parasites.

You will receive a puppy or kitten package filled with educational materials and samples to help you care for the newest family member.

Never hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about caring for your new pet.

Once your pet's initial appointment is complete, you'll return periodically for your pet's annual wellness exam and required booster shots

Seniors

Newer therapies, better nutrition and recent advances in veterinary medical knowledge mean that senior pets are now living longer and healthier than ever before.

As your pet ages, twice-yearly wellness examinations become increasingly important to ensure your senior pet's continuing health and longevity.

Your senior pet's wellness exam will include all of the procedures we perform on all adult pets, with additional focus on potential age-related conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision. Additional laboratory tests may also be recommended to provide information about your pet's overall health.

Vaccinations & Parasite Prevention

If your pet is due for any of their routine vaccinations or if they require preventive care, your vet will discuss this with you during your pet's routine wellness exam.
